アニオン性ポリアクリルアミド (APAM) は、アクリルアミドとアクリレートの共重合によって形成される水溶性線状高分子凝集剤です。水溶性の高分子であり、ほとんどの有機溶剤に溶けず、凝集作用に優れ、液間の摩擦抵抗を軽減できます。懸濁粒子の電荷を中和することで粒子の凝集を促進し、水中での粒子を不安定にします。不安定化した粒子は高分子ポリマーの活性遺伝子の架橋作用により相互に吸着します。最後に、より大きなフロックが形成されます。
