ポリアクリルアミドは線形有機ポリマーであり、ポリマー水処理凝集剤でもあります。水中の懸濁粒子を吸収し、粒子間で架橋するリンクの役割を果たすことができ、微粒子を大きなフロックと比較し、降水速度を加速させることができます。このプロセスは、その良好な凝集効果のために凝集と呼ばれ、PAMは水処理の凝集剤として使用され、下水処理で広く使用されています。
アニオン性ポリアクリルアミド（APAM）は、アクリルアミドとアクリル酸の共重合によって形成される水溶性線形高分子凝集剤です。懸濁粒子の電荷を中和することにより、粒子の凝集を促進し、水中の粒子を不安定にします。不安定な粒子は、高分子ポリマーの活性遺伝子の橋の作用の下で互いに吸着します。最後に、より大きなフロックが形成されます。
